About Us

The mission of the California Institute for Water Resources is to integrate California's research, extension, and education programs to develop research-based solutions to water resource challenges. We do this by facilitating collaborative research and outreach on water issues across California's academic institutions and with international, federal, state, regional, nonprofit, and campus communities. At CIWR, we:

  • Connect water resource knowledge and expertise from California's academic institutions with a broad range of communities
  • Develop relevant and timely research-based information on water issues to inform decision-making
  • Communicate research outcomes using targeted, innovative approaches
  • Coordinate resources across California's academic institutions to develop research-based solutions

The California Institute for Water Resources is governed based on a Strategic Plan for 2019-2023 that is developed with a core leadership team of water researchers in California. For a summary about the work of the California Institute for Water Resources, download our latest brochure.

The Institute is the California hub for the national network of water research institutes supported by the federal Water Resources Research Act of 1964.
